WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The University of Richmond baseball team fell to Towson Saturday evening, 3-2, at David F. Couch Ballpark, snapping their seven-game win streak.
Behind a double from Michael Morman down the left field line, the Spiders put up a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Towson looked to answer in the bottom half but left runners stranded on the corners.
Richmond extended its lead, 2-0, in the sixth behind a two-out RBI single from Daniel Brumbaugh, driving in Kyle Adams, who singled earlier in the inning.
Towson cut the Spiders' lead to one in the seventh off a double from Colin Dyer.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Tigers threatened to even the score as Chris Henze looked to cross the plate, but was tagged out by Brandon Johnson. With two outs, Towson kept runners on the corners, but a fly out ended the inning, allowing Richmond to maintain a 2-1 lead.
The Tigers evened the score in the ninth off a sacrifice fly before Henze delivered a two-single to drive in the winning run.
Sean Collins went a career long six innings, scattering just three hits while registering a career best three strikeouts. Peter Bovenzi made his third appearance as he tossed an inning of relief. The freshman gave up one run and struck out one.
At the plate, D.J. Lee and Johnson both had two hits on the night. Kurtis Brown and Tyler Beckwith have reached base safely in all 11 games thus far.
Richmond will return to action tomorrow to take on ACC foe, Wake Forest. The first pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m.
