Spiders Fall To ACC Foe, Wake Forest, Sunday Afternoon

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The University of Richmond baseball team dropped a 17-4 decision to ACC foe Wake Forest on Sunday.
Wake Forest's Will Craig gave the Demon Deacons a 3-0 lead in the third with his three-run home run.
The Spiders cut Wake Forest's lead to two, 3-1, in the fourth as Doug Kraeger delivered an RBI single to drive in Michael Morman.
The Deacons extended their lead with a run in the fifth and four runs in the sixth, capped by a bases clearing double from Ben Breazeale to put Wake Forest ahead, 8-1.
Kraeger led off the seventh with a single to left and Daniel Brumbaugh drew a walk before Zach Kurtz singled up the middle to score Kraeger, sparking a Richmond rally. Behind back-to-back walks to Tyler Beckwith and Dalton Light, Brumbaugh scored and Morman capped off the scoring in the frame with a sacrifice fly, pushing Kurtz across and making it an 8-4 ball game.
Wake Forest responded in the bottom of the frame with five runs highlighted by another three-run homer from Craig to take a 13-4.
The Spiders looked for another rally in the eighth when Kurtis Brown doubled to lead off the inning before Kyle Schmidt and Kurtz drew back-to-back walks to load the bases, but the runners were left stranded.
Beckwith and Brown have now reached base safely in all 12 games thus far.
The Deacons plated four more runs in the bottom of the eighth to extend their lead to 17-4.
On the mound, Zach Grossfeld recorded a career long outing of 5.1 innings while registering four strikeouts. Zach Moore, Will Geraghty, Michael Strait, and Brown all made their first appearance on the bump this season as they logged time in relief.
Richmond continues its road swing with a pair of midweek games in Charleston, S.C. The Spiders will take on College of Charleston on Tuesday with the first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
