04/10/2016 | Women's Lacrosse
PITTSBURGH, Pa. - It looked as though the Richmond women's lacrosse team would run away with a victory, but Duquesne came roaring back in a late second-half rally and scored in the first overtime period to take a 7-6 win.
Six different players scored for the Spiders, who move to 5-6 on the season and 1-3 in Atlantic 10 play.
It was a back-and-forth first half, as the Dukes took a 2-0 lead in the first half before the Spiders rattled off three straight goals to take a 3-2 lead. Kim Egizi and Emily Newman both posted free position goals for Richmond, while Hope D'Orsi scored off of a Katie Trainer assist.
Duquesne scored with 1:46 remaining in the half to tie the game going into halftime.
The Spiders built momentum entering the second half, as Natalia Chaney scored five minutes into the period. Brooke Wilson gave Richmond a 5-3 advantage just 55 seconds later, as she scored off of a free position attempt. Marissa Brown then gave the Spiders a three-goal lead with 18:06 left to play.
The Richmond defense stayed strong through the first 20 minutes of the half before Duquesne was able to get on the board again, cutting the Spiders' lead to two goals with 10:20 remaining.
The Dukes then scored two consecutive goals with less than four minutes to play to tie the game and send the contest into overtime. Duquesne's Jill Vacanti gave the Dukes the win when she scored her 30th goal of the season with 3:55 left to play in the sudden-victory overtime period.
The Spiders return to action on Friday, April 15, when they host George Washington in A-10 play. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
