Spiders' Comeback Falls Short Against George Washington
04/15/2016 | Women's Lacrosse
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – An impressive second half by the University of Richmond women's lacrosse team was not enough to overcome a four-goal halftime deficit, as the Spiders fell to George Washington, 11-10, on Friday evening.
Before the game, senior Michaela Aymong led the team in celebrating Friends of Jacqueline Day. The Friends of Jacqueline Foundation is an organization focused on improving the quality of life for children with pediatric brain tumors.
Brooke Wilson scored three goals for the Spiders, while five others added goals as Richmond moves to 5-7 overall and 1-4 in Atlantic 10 play.
Natalia Chaney got on the board early with a free-position goal less than two minutes into the contest, but George Washington answered 17 seconds later and scored five consecutive goals in the following nine minutes to take a 5-1 lead.
Wilson tallied her first score of the game off of an assist from Chaney with just under 19 minutes remaining in the half. The Colonials then scored two-straight goals to extend their lead to five goals.
Mia Castagnero scores her 33rd goal of the season to close out the half and give the Spiders momentum entering the break.
Richmond would take advantage of that momentum, as Emily Newman scored just over five minutes into the second half off of an assist from Wilson. Marissa Brown continued the scoring for Richmond with a goal four minutes later, before Aly Fries made it a one-goal game off of a Kim Egizi assist with 20:27 left in the game.
George Washington took an 8-6 lead two minutes later, but Richmond rebounded to tie the game with two goals from Wilson, one of which was assisted by Egizi.
The Colonials pulled ahead again with 12:39 left to play, but Castagnero notched her second score to tie the game again with 10 minutes to play.
The difference came in the closing minutes, as George Washington (3-10; 1-4 A-10) scored twice to take an 11-9 lead with 6:40 remaining in the game. Chaney scored her second goal of the game with 25 second left, but it wasn't enough, as the Colonials won the final draw and the game.
The Spiders return to action on Sunday, April 17, when they travel to Davidson, North Carolina, to take on the Wildcats. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
