UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- The slate is set for the University of Richmond field hockey team, the reigning Atlantic 10 Regular Season Champions, as head coach Gina Lucido announced the 2016 schedule, Friday morning.
The schedule is highlighted by five non-conference opponentes who finished in last year's top-20 with UVA, Duke and Louisville all finishing in the top-12 nationally.
"The 2016 schedule presents us with another opportunity to jump into the national spotlight," said coach Lucido. "Overall, I want the team tested and prepared for a long postseason. I do believe they will be ready to contend with the established powerhouses in 2016."
The season will open with four consecutive road matches beginning with a weekend trip to American (August 26) and Drexel (August 28). Richmond will conclude the road swing with a pair of games in Louisville against Ball State (September 3) and NCAA Tournament participant, Louisville (September 4).
The Spiders are set to open their home slate at the friendly confines of Crenshaw Field on September 9 when in-state rival, Old Dominion visits. William & Mary will travel up to the River City on September 16 before Richmond enters conference play.
Atlantic 10 action will begin at St. Francis (Pa.) on September 18, before the Spiders host Davidson for the home conference opener on September 23 and Lock Haven two days later.
Richmond will visit the City of Brotherly Love to play at Saint Joseph's (September 30) and La Salle (October 2). The Atlantic 10 Tournament Champions and NCAA Tournament participant, Massachusetts, will face the Spiders at Crenshaw Field on October 9.
The Spiders will play break-up conference play with a pair of games at James Madison (October 14) and with NCAA quarterfinalist, Virginia at home (October 18).
On October 21, the crosstown rivalry with VCU continues as the two teams will play at Cary Street Field.
Richmond will conclude its non-conference schedule at Rutgers on October 23 and at NCAA semifinalist, Duke, on October 29, before Saint Louis visits to close out the regular season on October 30.
The Spiders will not have to travel far for this year's Atlantic 10 Tournament, as VCU will serve as this year's host with the tournament set to begin on November 4.
