UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – In a rematch of last year's Atlantic 10 Championship match, the University of Richmond women's lacrosse team flexed their muscles, but ultimately fell short, dropping an 18-10 decision to #12 UMass on a gloomy Friday afternoon at Robins Stadium.
Sophomore Kim Egizi led the way for the Spiders with a career-high five goals, along with an assist, to tie a career-high with six points on the afternoon. Classmate Hope D'Orsi and senior Brooke Wilson also had multi-goal performances, each finding the back of the net twice in the contest.
Richmond is the first team all year to score double-figures against UMass, who entered the contest with the fourth-ranked defense in the country.
The Minutewomen, who extended its winning streak to nine with the win, jumped out to an early lead with a man-up goal less than two minutes into the contest and one more at the 26:05 mark to take a 2-0 lead.
Marissa Brown got the Spiders on the board in the seventh minute off a free position shot, but UMass would answer with five unanswered to push their advantage to 7-1 with under 10 minutes left in the half.
Egizi would make a move and find the back of the catch for the first time at the 9:17 mark of the first half, then again two other times before the break as UMass headed to the locker room with a 10-4 lead.
The Minutewomen would score off a free-position shot less than 90 seconds into the second half, but that's when the Spiders came alive.
Egizi made another move to get loose and score her fourth goal of the game at the 27:42 mark to make it 11-5. Over the next three minutes, the Spiders found the back of the net three more times, one from Wilson and two from D'Orsi to make it just a three-goal differential with under 25 minutes to play.
However, UMass responded, scoring five of the next six goals to push the lead to 16-9 and ultimately hold on for the 18-10 lead.
Richmond wraps up its 2016 home slate on Sunday when it takes on La Salle in a critical Atlantic 10 matchup. Prior to the game, the Spiders will honor its three seniors. Game time at Robins Stadium and on SpiderTV is set for 12 p.m.
