Seniors Lead Spiders To 16-7 Victory Over La Salle In Home Finale

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Talk about going out with a bang.
The three seniors on the University of Richmond women's lacrosse team did just that on Sunday afternoon, sparking the Spiders to a dominating 16-7 victory over La Salle on a beautiful afternoon at Robins Stadium.
“I'm really proud of the way we came out and set the tone early,” Head Coach Allison Kwolek said. “It's always good to send your seniors out with a win and we'll look to build on this game heading into our regular season finale next weekend.”
Senior Michaela Aymong had a career-performance in goal, with a career-high 17 and holding the Explorers to just 1-for-8 on free-position shots. Classmate Emily Newman tallied her third career hat trick with three goals and an assist, while Brooke Wilson found the back of the net for her 28th goal of the season. Wilson has now scored in all but one Spider game this year.
“The three of us all knew how much everyone wanted to win for us because it was Senior Day, but we really wanted to win just as much for them too, so it was a total team effort today,” Newman said.
Freshman Marissa Brown had a career performance with a game-high seven points with three goals and four assists for the Spiders.
“We all wanted to come out and win this game for our seniors. They mean so much to this team and program and we really just wanted to send them off with a win,” Brown said.
La Salle got the scoring started with a goal less than 90 seconds into the game, but that's all the momentum the Explorers would have all day.
Brown got the Spiders on the board just over two minutes later, finding the back of the net on a free position shot. Thirty seconds later, she took a fastbreak pass from Natalia Chaney and scored again to give Richmond a lead it would never relinquish.
The Spiders would pile it up, scoring seven straight goals over the next 15 minutes, capped by a goal from Hope D'Orsi off a feed from Newman to push Richmond to a 7-1 advantage with 10 minutes left in the first.
La Salle got two back, but Brown struck again, setting up two more goals (one by Chaney and one by Julie Ball) and scoring her third of the game before the break to send the Spiders into the break with a 10-4 lead.
The Explorers would get no closer than five the rest of the way after Newman and Wilson both scored in the opening 10 minutes of the second half.
Aymong was spectacular all game long, particularly in the second half when the senior made 11 saves.
“It was a great team win for us. I thought we came out really energized from the start and really stuck to our game plan and were able to execute throughout the game,” Aymong said.
Newman and Chaney would both score in the final 90 seconds to close out the victory and keep the Spiders alive in the hunt for a spot in the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
Richmond will close out the regular season next Saturday, April 30 when they travel to St. Bonaventure. Game time in Olean, N.Y. is set for 12 p.m.
