A milestone day for the University of Richmond women's lacrosse team was soured by visiting George Mason, as the Spiders fell 9-8 to the Patriots in a tightly contested game on Sunday afternoon at Robins Stadium.
Richmond's Caroline Queally recorded her 100th career draw control in the second half of the game. The sophomore out-dueled the George Mason specialist, grabbing the milestone draw to keep the game close in the waning minutes.
Freshman Mia Castagnero started the scoring for the Spiders less that six minutes into the game when she tallied her first of a career-high six goals for Richmond.
George Mason then scored three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead with just under seven minutes remaining in the half before Kim Egizi scored her first goal of the game off of an assist from Brooke Wilson to make the score 3-2 at the half.
The Patriots extended their lead to 4-2 with a man-up goal with 17:54 left to play, but Egizi answered, scoring her second goal of the day to pull the Spiders to within one.
George Mason scored again just 27 second later, but Castagnero scored two consecutive goals, one on a free-position attempt, to tie the game at five goals apiece. Mason would then score on its own free-position attempt, but Castagnero answered yet again to make the score 6-6.
The Patriots took an 8-6 lead with just under 10 minutes left in the game when they scored off of two more free-position attempts, but Castagnero stepped up once again, scoring twice to tie the game at eight goals apiece with 6:45 left to play.
The game-winner came with 3:31 remaining, as the Patriots converted another free-position shot and held on to post a 9-8 win.
The Spiders return to action on Friday, April 8, when they travel to Philadelphia to take on Saint Joseph's in Atlantic 10 action. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
