Spiders Take Down St. Bonaventure In Regular-Season Finale

OLEAN, N.Y.. – The University of Richmond women's lacrosse team needed everything to go its way on Saturday, and that's exactly what happened.
After entering the day tied for seventh in the conference and on the outside of the Atlantic 10 tournament looking in, the Spiders beat St. Bonaventure, 17-13, to qualify for their third-consecutive postseason.
Kim Egizi led the Spiders with a career-high seven goals, while Marissa Brown, Natalia Chaney and Brooke Wilson each tallied four points apiece.
“It was a good win today,” head coach Allison Kwolek said. “We had a lot of quality looks on cage, and Caroline Queally did a great job on the draw which continued to give us momentum throughout the game.”
Queally recorded 12 draw controls in the win. Her 82 draw controls this season is the most ever in a single-season by a Spider in program history.
St. Bonaventure started the scoring just over a minute into the contest to take a 1-0 lead, but Richmond responded with four straight goals to jump out to a 4-1 advantage.
Chaney tied the game at 1-1 off of an assist by Wilson, before Mia Castagnero scored an unassisted goal to give the Spiders the lead for good. Kathleen Berkery made it 3-1 off of a free-position goal before Castagnero added her second goal of the game with 18:03 left in the half.
The Bonnies rebounded to make it a two-goal game, but Chaney and Egizi each scored twice in the next eight minutes to give the Spiders a, 8-2 lead. Wilson assisted one of Chaney's scores.
St. Bonaventure cut Richmond's lead to five with 6:43 remaining in the half, but Egizi notched a hat trick on an assist from Brown just over two minutes later to extend the lead to 9-3. The Bonnies were able to score once more before the half, but Richmond entered the break with a 9-4 advantage.
The Spiders had a scare at the beginning of the second half when St. Bonaventure scored twice to cut the lead to three, but Egizi and Brown each scored to make it an 11-6 game. Chaney assisted Brown's goal.
Bonaventure scored two more goals to cut the lead to three once again, but the Spiders posted goals from Castagnero, Egizi and Brown to take a 14-8 lead with 7:57 left to play. Aly Fries recorded a point with her assist to Egizi.
The two teams contued to trade goals, with the Bonnies scoring two before Richmond with goals from Egizi and Wilson. Brown and Hope D'Orsi posted assists on the goals, respectively.
Bonaventure cut it to a 16-11 Richmond lead before Egizi scored the final Spider goal of the game off of an assist from Wilson. The Bonnies would go on to score twice more, but Richmond was able to hold on for the 17-13 win.
“We are excited to have this opportunity,” Kwolek said of the tournament berth. “The team has been focused and working hard too improve parts of our game. We've learned a lot from the season so far and are thrilled to have the chance to continue to play and get better as a team.”
Richmond will be the No. 6 seed in this year's Atlantic 10 Championship held at Duquesne. The Spiders will face the No. 3 seed, which will be determined following today's games.
