LORETTO, Pa. – Behind a pair of goals from seniors Emma Johansson and Kelly Quinn, the University of Richmond field hockey team defeated Saint Francis, 2-1, in the Atlantic 10 Conference opener. With the win, the Spiders snapped SFU's six-game win streak.
"The leadership today literally propelled the team into our first conference win," said head coach Gina Lucido. "Captains Emma and Kelly put the weight of the win on their back and created goals against a tough St. Francis defense. The team's ability to be adaptable and overcome every challenge was our best showing to date."
Saint Francis (6-2, 0-1) came out ready for a battle, as the Red Flash found the back of the cage just four minutes into the game to take a 1-0 lead off a penalty corner.
The Spiders (3-4, 1-0) had quality shots in the first half, but Red Flash defense held Richmond at bay and held on to a 1-0 advantage at the break.
Richmond's defense was huge stopping the Red Flash from extending their lead after the break.
"Thalia Williamson had a huge defensive save before we were able to score in the second half and impacted momentum significantly," said coach Lucido.
Sophomore Nealy Henderson found Johansson, who notched the equalizer in the 42nd minute as she found an opening on the far side of the cage.
With seven minutes remaining in the game, Quinn scored her first goal of the season off a corner as she chipped in a shot from freshman Kaitlyn DaSilva that sneaked in past the keeper.
The Spiders will return home for a pair of conference match-ups beginning on Friday, September 23 with Davidson at 3:00 p.m.
