Golden Goal Sends Spiders Past Davidson, 3-2
10/06/2017 | Field Hockey
DAVIDSON, N.C. – Behind a golden goal from freshman Florentine Beelaerts van Blokland in double overtime, the Spiders defeated Davidson in a nail-biter, 3-2, Friday night at Davidson.
Before Beelaerts van Blokland's late game heroics, senior Kasey Gilbride got things started for the Spiders registering her third goal of the season. Gilbride knocked the ball in off a rebound on classmate Hannah Thomson's shot that was turned away by the Davidson keeper.
The Spiders kept the momentum going when Beelaerts van Blokland dribbled up the field before connecting with Thomson who found an opening in the bottom corner to give Richmond a 2-0 lead.
Thomson looked to extend Richmond's lead before time expired in the first half firing off a pair of shots in a matter of seconds, but one was stopped by the 'Cats keeper while the other sailed wide.
Behind a pair of goals from Hannah Fisher, Davidson tied the game at 2-2. Her first goal came off a penalty corner, and she notched the equalizer in the 54th minute.
Both teams looked to break the tie, but neither defense would budge which kept the 2-2 score intact sending the game to overtime.
Again, both teams looked for opportunities and fired off shots, but nothing would get through.
In the 91st minute, Beelaerts van Blokland launched a shot that was saved by the 'Cats keeper and then controlled the rebound of her own shot which found the back of the cage to give the Spiders a 3-2 victory.
The Spiders will continue their road swing in the Tar Heel State as they square off with #15 Wake Forest on Sunday at 1 p.m.
