UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – With a sold out crowd amped up all night and a NBA legend on the sidelines, sophomore De'Monte Buckingham and redshirt freshman Grant Golden took center stage with career nights for the University of Richmond men's basketball program.
Buckingham and Golden combined for 52 points and 16 rebounds, but the effort came up just short as the Spiders dropped a tough 82-76 decision to Big East foe Georgetown on Saturday night at the Robins Center.
It was the fourth 20-plus point performance of Buckingham's career with a career-high 28 points on 9-of-12 shooting, including 9-of-11 from the charity stripe. Golden continued his outstanding season with his third 20-plus point performance this year, finishing with his first career double-double, 24 points and 10 rebounds. His night included a career-high four three-pointers.
The duo was the first pair of Spider teammates since T.J. Cline (26) and Khwan Fore (24) both eclipsed 20-plus points in the same game on February 4, 2017 against George Washington.
Fore was the third Spider in double-figures on the night, pouring in 12 points and three assists in a season-high 29 minutes.
With Patrick Ewing roaming the sidelines for the Hoyas, Georgetown jumped out to a 14-8 early advantage with 12 minutes to play in the first half.
That's when Buckingham and Golden would take over, sparking a 10-0 run, seven of which were scored by Buckingham to give the Spiders a 18-14 lead with less than 10 minutes to play in the first half.
Richmond would stretch its late to as large as seven when Julius Johnson connected on a three-pointer to give the Spiders a 28-21 lead with 6:38 to play in the first half.
The teams would trade baskets for the final five minutes of the stanza until Georgetown made a late push to hold a 40-39 halftime advantage.
The second half featured four lead changes and one tie as the teams traded baskets, with the Hoyas getting their largest lead of the game at seven, before Golden struck again, knocking down his fourth three-pointer and getting the Spiders back within two with under two minutes to play.
However, Georgetown responded with a three of their own and hit free-throws down the stretch to seal the 82-76 win.
Richmond is back in action on Wednesday when they host reigning America East Champions Vermont in a 7 p.m. showdown. The Catamounts (5-1) only loss this season is to top-10 Kentucky.
