UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Facing yet another NCAA Tournament participant from last year, the University of Richmond men's basketball team fought until the final buzzer, but came up just short on Wednesday night at the Robins Center.
The Spiders (1-6) displayed a balanced attack all night with all five starters in double figures, but it wasn't enough in a 71-65 loss to Vermont, the reigning America East Champions and a team that entered the night ranked fourth in the NCAA RPI rankings.
"We've certainly seen improvement in several areas, but we have to maturing quicker and quicker," Head Coach Chris Mooney said. "Against a very good team in Vermont, we have to be able to take advantage of the opportunities and do a little more and do all the little things better and better."
Sophomore Nick Sherod led the Spiders with 14 points, his highest output since the Atlantic 10 semifinal last year against VCU. Sherod went 5-of-9 from the field and 4-of-6 from long range, along with four rebounds.
Freshman Jacob Gilyard and redshirt freshmen Grant Golden both poured in 13 points, while De'Monte Buckingham had 12 and Khwan Fore was the fifth player in double-figures with 11.
The five starters in double-figures marked just the second time in the past eight years that the Spiders had all five in double-digits, with the only other time coming in the Atlantic 10 semifinal last year against VCU.
"We just have to do a better job of focusing and concentrating, making the play when we absolutely need to," Sherod said. "We've gotten better with each game, but we have to continue to work and make sure we take care of all the details."
Sherod and Gilyard got the Spiders started on the right track with back-to-back three-pointers to give Richmond an early 6-4 lead, but the Catamounts responded by scoring the next six points to take a 10-6 advantage.
The back-and-forth battle continued throughout the first half with Vermont's lead stretching to seven with 2:26 to play, but back-to-back buckets from Golden brought the Spiders within three.
Vermont headed into the locker room with a 32-27 lead, but Sherod connected on two three-pointers in the first two minutes of the second half to bring Richmond within one, 34-33 with 18:38 to play.
The Catamounts pushed their lead to eight, 55-47 with 10:09 remaining, but once again the Spiders responded, climbing back within one, 55-54, on a three from Gilyard with 7:38 left in the contest.
It would remain no more than a two-possession game for the rest of the night, but Vermont went 4-of-5 from the charity stripe in the final minute to secure the win.
Richmond returns to action on Saturday, hitting the road to face ACC foe Wake Forest. Game time in Winston-Salem is set for 4 p.m.
