Spiders Power Past Saint Joseph's 10-2 in Series Opener

MERION STATION, Pa. – It didn't take long for the Spider Baseball team to warm up on a brisk Friday afternoon at Saint Joseph's, in an important Atlantic 10 Conference showdown. In the first two frames, the Spiders pushed across seven runs to take an early lead they wouldn't relinquish, as they secured the series opening victory, 10-2.
Robbie Baker logged a career long outing on the hill, tossing eight innings. The right-hander scattered six hits, registered five strikeouts, and only walked three.
D.J. Lee got things started with a leadoff double and ended up scoring on a sacrifice bunt from Daniel Brumbaugh. Richmond added a run thanks to a Jonathan de Marte RBI single and would cap off the first inning outburst with a two-run single from Kyle Adams to make it 4-0.
Behind a three-run homer from Brumbaugh, the Spiders extended their lead 7-0 in the second.
The Hawks scratched a run across in the fourth as they looked to chip away at Richmond's lead.
The Spiders would tack on two more runs in the top half of the seventh to take a 9-2 advantage off a two-run single from Kyle Schmidt.
Saint Joseph's wouldn't go quietly. In the home half of the inning, as Peter Sitaras hit a solo shot. The Spiders would add one more in the ninth behind an Adams single to make it 10-2.
Peter Bovenzi came in to shut down the game and held the Hawks at bay to preserve the Spiders' victory.
Richmond will continue the series with the Hawks tomorrow at 2 p.m.
