UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – A late rally by the University of Richmond baseball team came up just short in the finale of a three-game set against in-state and Atlantic 10 George Mason on a sunny Sunday at Pitt Field.

The Spiders fell to the Patriots 4-3, with multiple runners on in each of the final two innings.

Sophomore D.J. Lee led the offense with two hits and two runs on the day, while Layne Looney, Jonathan de Marte and Zach Grossfeld combined to allow just eight hits and three earned runs in the contest.

“We're just not doing enough to win games right now. We have some pieces, but we haven't been able to put it all together for nine innings,” Head Coach Tracy Woodson said.

Lee's speed got Richmond on board in the first with a leadoff single and his 13^th stolen base moved him to second. A miscue from the Patriots allowed Lee to score and give the Spiders a 1-0 lead.

Mason responded right away by scoring three in the top half of the second to grab a 3-1 cushion.

The hurlers from both sides would go to work, silencing the scoreboard until the bottom of the fifth when RJ Watters launched his first career homerun to left field.

Mason responded with a solo homerun of its own in the top of the seventh to push the lead to 4-2.

Richmond's rally started in the eighth when Lee roped a leadoff single and three batters later after a hit batter and another Mason error, the Spiders had the bases loaded with one out. A sacrifice fly from Kurtis Brown brought home Lee to make it a one-run game again at 4-3.

The Spiders would get two runners on in the ninth, but the Patriot bullpen was able to close the door and secure the win.

Richmond returns to action on Tuesday night when it travels to Chapel Hill, N.C. to take on #4 UNC. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
