Spiders Fall in Series Opener to VCU

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond's crosstown rivalry with VCU extends past the basketball court. This afternoon, the Spiders hosted its intra-city foe at Pitt Field in an Atlantic 10 showdown.
It was a battle on the diamond in the first game of the series, but VCU took game one by a score of 14-7.
The Rams jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. They'd continue to threaten looking to increase their lead in the third, but a strikeout from Robbie Baker ended the inning.
In the bottom of the third, back-to-back singles from Kyle Adams and Justin Cook started a Spider rally. An RBI single from RJ Watters pushed across the first run of the game for Richmond before a two-run single from Daniel Brumbaugh cut VCU's lead to one, 4-3.
VCU would answer with a three-run homer in the fourth to make a 7-3 ballgame. The Spiders weren't going to go quietly though. With a pair of two-out singles from Jonathan de Marte and Kurtis Brown, Richmond continued to chip away at the Rams' lead, 8-5.
The Rams would tack on three more in sixth and one in the seventh to extend their lead to 12-5.
Brumbaugh got things started in the seventh with a leadoff double and scored thanks to Brown. VCU flexed its muscles in the eighth with back-to-back home runs to take a 14-6 advantage.
Richmond looked to fuel a rally in the bottom of the ninth with back-to-back singles from Vinny Capra and Brumbaugh. Brown knocked in a run to cut the lead to 14-7.
The series will continue tomorrow with the first pitch slated for 12:00 p.m.
