Dunbar & Marshall Win Doubles Flight At Navy Invitational

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team completed its first fall tournament of the 2018-19 season with sophomore Emily Dunbar (Medina, Ohio) and junior Kiana Marshall (Bridgetown, Barbados) coming home with a doubles title at the Navy Invitational from Oct. 5-7.
Dunbar and Marshall finished with a perfect 3-0 doubles record playing in the top flight. In the finals, Dunbar and Marshall earned a 6-3 victory against Rutgers' Jaci Cochrane and Kristina Zahare. Their toughest match was in the semifinals against Rutgers' Sydney Kaplan and Maya Jacobs, 7-6 (7-3).
Lea Owens (Olney, Md.) and Dessi Zlateva (Sofia, Bulgaria) went 1-1. Helene Heiberg (Oslo, Norway) and Lyndell Giffenig (Salisbury, Conn.) also went 1-1 in the tournament earning a consolation win against Saint Francis' Gutierrez and Miller, 7-5.
In singles, Heiberg went 2-2 after winning two consolation matches in the C Flight. Sophomore Adrienne Haynes (Asheville, NC) won three consolation matches, including the D flight consolation final 8-2 against Towson's Phoebe Collins.
Marshall went 2-1 on the weekend falling in the semifinals against Rutgers' Sydney Kaplan, 6-4, 6-3. Marshall earned a tough first round win against Tess Fisher from Rutgers in three sets, 0-6, 7-5, 10-1 in the super tiebreaker.
Senior Ana Ramirez (Mexico City, Mexico) went 1-1 in the B Flight earning a first-round win against Laura Gutierrez from Saint Francis, 6-1, 2-6, 10-4 in the super tiebreaker.
Next up, UR will compete at the ITA Atlantic Regionals on Oct. 12-16 hosted by Liberty.
