Parson’s Season High Not Enough In Loss At Wake Forest

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The University of Richmond women's basketball team lost 62-48 at Wake Forest Sunday despite a season-high 18 points from sophomore point guard Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) at LJVM Coliseum. Parson also grabbed a career-high nine rebounds in the loss.
Richmond falls to 0-3 on the season and Wake Forest improves to 3-0. The Spiders forced 21 Demon Deacon turnovers and swiped nine steals. Wake Forest outrebounded Richmond, 45-34. Both teams struggled from the three-point line as the Spiders finished shooting 21.7 percent (5-for-23) and Wake Forest shot just 18.8 percent (3-of-16).
Parson has scored in double-figures in back-to-back games but only shot 8-for-22 from the field. Junior Jayana Ervin (Tacoma, Wash.) added eight points and three steals. Junior Amy Duggan (Norwood, Mass.) scored five points off the bench.
Richmond jumped ahead early after Parson scored the first five points of the game to lead 5-2 on the road. The Spiders continued to lead 11-7 after a layup inside by Duggan with 1:15 left in the quarter. Parson ended the quarter with a pull-up bucket to give Richmond a 13-9 lead after one quarter.
In the second quarter, the Spiders forced a quick timeout by Wake Forest after back-to-back buckets from Ervin and Parson. With 7:07 on the clock, Ervin made a jumper to push Richmond's lead to 19-12. Wake Forest answered by taking their first lead off a 20-2 run to pull in front 32-21. The Spiders were outscored 25-10 in the second quarter.
The Spiders opened the third quarter with a 5-2 run capped by a corner three-pointer by Duggan to cut Wake's lead to 36-28. The Demon Deacons quickly responded with a 7-0 burst to push their lead back to 15 points at 43-28. Wake Forest would hold Richmond to just nine points in the quarter to go ahead 48-32 after three.
In the final frame, the Spiders got off to a fast start with a 5-2 run thanks to a three-pointer by freshman Emma Squires (Kingston, Mass.). Richmond got within 12 points at 60-48 off a three-pointer from sophomore Kailyn Fee (Vienna, Va.) with 3:46 remaining. Wake's defense would hold strong by not allowing the Spiders to score again to make the final score 62-48.
Richmond will head back home to host Maryland-Eastern Shore on Wednesday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m.
