Ruffin Hits Clutch Free Throws In Richmond Win

RICHMOND, Va. – Graduate transfer Daijia Ruffin (Louisville, Ky.) hit two free throws with 16 seconds left to help the University of Richmond women's basketball team overcome a tough shooting night in a 57-55 win against Maryland Eastern Shore Wednesday night at Robins Center.
Ruffin provided the Spiders with a huge lift off the bench scoring a season-high 17 points off 4-for-5 shooting and went 9-of-13 from the free throw line. Ruffun grabbed seven rebounds and earned two steals.
"With a young basketball team, learning how to win is the biggest lesson you can give them," head coach Michael Shafer said. "I was proud of how we made plays down the stretch and hit some shots that won us a basketball game."
Richmond improved to 1-3 on the season and UMES fell to 0-4. Junior Jaide Hinds-Clarke scored a season-high 15 points and pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds. Hinds-Clarke was a force on the glass with 10 offensive rebounds and led the team with four steals.
The Spiders finished the game shooting 27.5 percent (19-for-69) from the field but outrebounded the Hawks, 47-42, including a key offensive rebound by Ruffin with the game tied in the fourth quarter.
Maryland Eastern Shore went ahead in the fourth quarter 51-47 with 1:18 remaining off a free throw by Ksenia Popovich. Ruffin hit two free throws to cut the lead to 51-49 before UMES answered with a layup by Blairesha Gills-Miles to make the score 53-49.
Sophomore Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) nailed a three-pointer to cut the lead to one at 53-52. UMES hit two free throws to go up by three at 55-52 with 30 seconds left. Hinds-Clarke grabbed another offensive rebound and made a layup plus was fouled to get within one at 55-54. Hinds-Clarke missed the free throw but Ruffin grabbed the offensive rebound and got fouled. Ruffin calmly made two free throws with 16 seconds left to give Richmond a 56-55 lead.
UMES had a jumper to regained the lead but it fell off the rim and Ruffin was there for the rebound. Ruffin hit one of two free throws to seal the victory.
Richmond fell behind early after Maryland Eastern Shore led 14-8 after the first quarter. The Spiders opened the second quarter with a 5-2 run off a jumper by freshman Emma Squires (Kingston, Mass.). With 3:53 left in the second quarter, Squires hit a three-pointer to get Richmond within three points at 23-20. The Hawks would lead 29-25 after two quarters.
In the third quarter, the Spiders went on a massive 16-0 run capped by a steal and fast break layup by Ruffin to make the score 41-31. UMES would battle back to cut Richmond's lead to 43-36 to setup the dramatic fourth quarter.
Only five Spiders scored with 23 points coming off the bench, including six from junior Amy Duggan (Norwood, Mass.).
Richmond will travel to Boca Raton, Fl. To face Florida Atlantic on Sunday, Nov. 18, at 2 p.m.
