Late Rally Falls Short, Spiders Drop Series Opener to Binghamton
03/02/2018 | Baseball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – It was a battle on the diamond at Pitt Field Friday afternoon. However, the Spiders' rally in the ninth fell short as they dropped the series opener to Binghamton, 5-4.
Richmond took a 1-0 lead in the first after Jordan Schulefand drew a bases loaded walk which allowed Vinny Capra to score. It would remain all Richmond for much of the game until Binghamton took control of the scoreboard in the seventh. The Bearcats scored four runs to take a 4-1 lead. Binghamton tacked on a run in the eighth to extend their lead, 5-1.
Behind a double down the right field line from Daniel Brumbaugh in the eighth, Capra and Anthony Forte crossed the plate to cut Binghamton's lead to two, 5-3. Richmond looked to continue a late surge when Schulefand started the ninth with a single to left and advanced to second on an error. Brandon Johnson followed with a double to the gap in right center to bring home Schulefand and cut Binghamton's lead to one, 5-4. The rally would fall just short as the Bearcats took the win in the first game of the series.
The Spiders and Binghamton will square off again tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
