Spiders Open A-10 Play With 17-5 Win Over UMass

The Spiders (13-8, 1-0) struck first with D.J. Lee's sac fly in the second to drive in Anthony Forte for a 1-0 advantage. Behind four hits in the fourth, Richmond scored four runs to take a 5-0 lead over UMass (6-5, 0-1). The Minutemen weren't going to go without putting up a fight though as they responded with four runs of their own in the fifth to cut Richmond's lead to one, 5-4.
Richmond answered quickly by adding an insurance run in the home half of the inning when Lee drew a bases loaded walk, and from that point on it was all Spiders.
Behind a Tyler Plantier double in the sixth, Sage Bruhl and Kyle Adams crossed the dish to extend the Spiders' lead to 8-4. Richmond put up a seven-spot in the seventh, capitalizing on walks allowed by the UMass pitchers.
The Minutemen scratched across a run in the eighth on a sac fly. Richmond answered in the home half with a pair of runs thanks to a Forte single and a double from Jordan Schulefand.
Richmond is set to continue the series with UMass tomorrow at 1PM.
