ARLINGTON, Va. – Behind an outburst in the sixth, the Spider Baseball team defeated George Washington, 6-4 on Friday evening.
GW (19-14, 5-2) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first and looked to add to their lead in the second, but a play at the plate kept it a two-run ball game.
The Spiders (18-14, 4-3) continued to threaten, but the GW defense stifled any opportunity early. In the fifth behind an RBI single the Colonials extended their lead to 4-0. They looked to add to their lead in the inning, but Antonio Balducci pitched out of the jam.
Richmond took control of the scoreboard in the sixth. Tyler Plantier sparked the Spider offense in the sixth with a leadoff double. Kyle Schmidt followed suit and with his double drove in Plantier to put the Spiders on the board. Daniel Brumbaugh continued the inning with a double of his own allowing Schmidt to score and get within two, 4-2. Richmond continued to chip away at the Colonials' lead as Sage Bruhl took a pitch on the shoulder to make it a one-run game. Vinny Capra smacked a two-run double to left to cap of the outburst and give Richmond a 5-4 advantage.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Colonials threatened with a pair of runners in scoring position, but Jacob Lamb made a grab on the hill to maintain Richmond's 5-4 lead.
Anthony Forte doubled in the eighth to send home Brumbaugh, who led off the inning with a walk, to put Richmond ahead by two, 6-4.
Layne Looney took over the hill in the bottom of the eighth and sent the Colonials down in order. GW wasn't going to go quietly as they put runners in scoring position in the ninth to pick up his fifth save of the season. With the save, Looney is now tied for ninth in single season saves.
The Spiders and Colonials are set to resume the series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. due to the forecast calling for heavy rain and thunderstorms on Sunday.
