04/20/2018 | Women's Lacrosse
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's lacrosse team couldn't hold off a powerful UMass offense on Friday afternoon, falling to the Minutewomen, 17-13, at Robins Stadium.
Â
UMass jumped out to an early two-goal lead, but Katie Sciandra's 53rd goal of the season sparked a four-goal outburst by the Spiders over a five-minute span. Katie Trainer tied things up, before Kim Egizi and Aly Fries scored to give the Spiders their first lead of the day.
Â
The Minutewomen tied things up again before Madison Ostrick scored a man-up goal and Fries scored her second of the day to make it 6-4. The two teams each scored once, including Sciandra's second of the day, but the Minutewomen tallied three scores in the final 7:27 to take a one-goal lead into the break.
Â
UMass continued with the momentum, scoring just over a minute into the second stanza, but Sciandra logged the hat trick to stop the run.
Â
Rachel Ziemba pulled the Spiders to within one again on a wrap-around goal with 25:54 to play, however UMass scored three-straight to take its largest lead of the day.
Â
Mia Castagnero got on the board on a free position goal before UMass tallied two more to take a 14-10 lead. Fries answered, logging her second hat trick in as many games, but the Minutewomen would not go away, and extended the lead back out to four with under 10 minutes left in the game.
Â
Sciandra tallied her team-leading fourth goal of the day with 5:29 remaining to spark the Spiders, but it was short-lived, as UMass scored twice more to take a 17-12 lead. Julie Ball rounded out the scoring with her second career goal and first since 2016.
Â
Megan Gianforte finished with 13 saves in the contest, and Ball finished with a game-high four caused turnovers. Egizi collected four ground balls to lead the Spiders, and Caroline Queally won eight draw controls to help Richmond to an 18-14 advantage at the draw.
Â
The Spiders return to action on Sunday, April 22, when they host La Salle in the team's final home game of the season. Game time is set for 12 p.m., and the team will celebrate the careers of seniors Egizi, Queally, Trainer, Brynn Taylor, Tegan Helms and Carolyn Chambers following the game.
