04/22/2018 | Women's Lacrosse
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND – The University of Richmond women's lacrosse team made sure to send out its 2018 senior class with a bang.
Â
Senior Kim Egizi scores six goals and assisted on one other, while fellow senior Caroline Queally tied her career high with 12 draw control wins to lead the Spiders to an 18-11 win over visiting La Salle on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Katie Sciandra started the scoring for the Spiders with two goals in the opening minute of play, before La Salle responded with a goal of its own. Julia Schmuckler extended the Spider lead on a feed from Marissa Brown, but the Explorers responded once again to keep the score tight through the opening five minutes.
Â
It was Egizi's first goal of the game that broke things open for the Spiders and started a five-goal run over an 11-minute span. Brown, Mia Castagnero and Aly Fries each scored to go along with two goals from Egizi.
Â
Egizi and Castagnero would each score twice more before the end of the half, but the Explorers also scored four times in the closing nine minutes to send the Spiders into the break with a 12-6 advantage.
Â
After Rachel Ziemba opened the second half scoring off of an assist from Katie Trainer, the Explorers logged three-straight goals to cut the Spider lead to four.
Â
Castagnero logged the hat trick with just over 20 minutes remaining before Brown and Egizi each scored to extend the lead to 16-9. Two more goals, one each from Egizi and Trainer, were bookended by La Salle tallies to make the final score 18-11.
Â
ÂWith her assist on the day, Egizi moves into a tie for second all-time in career assists at Richmond. Her 10 draw controls, combined with Queally's 12 and three from Julie Ball, gave the Spiders a 25-6 advantage at the draw to tie the single-game program record.
Â
The Spiders return to action on Saturday, April 28, when they travel to face St. Bonaventure to wrap up regular-season play. Game time in Olean, N.Y., is set for 11 a.m.
