Hot Hitting Leads Spiders Past Davidson Sunday
04/22/2018 | Baseball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Behind hot hitting and strong pitching performances the Spider Baseball team powered past Davidson in the series finale, 10-6, Sunday afternoon.
Davidson quickly grabbed a 4-0 lead in the first, but the Spiders responded in the home half thanks to a two-run double from Kyle Schmidt.
The Spider offense with six runs in the third. With the bases loaded, Sage Bruhl smacked a two-run single to right center to drive in Kyle Adams and Vinny Capra evening the score at 4-4. An RBI single from Daniel Brumbaugh scored Schmidt to give Richmond their first lead of the game - one they wouldn't relinquish. Behind an Anthony Forte triple and a D.J. Lee double, the Spiders extended their lead to 8-4.
With Forte's triple, he now has five on the season and is tied for third in single season triples.
Richmond tacked on a run in the bottom half of the sixth to go up 9-4. The Wildcats began to chip away at the Spiders' lead with a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to make it a three-run game. In the home half of the inning, Richmond added a run on a sac fly to take a four-run lead, 10-6.
Layne Looney took over the hill in the top of the seventh and was lights out en route to his sixth save of the season. The right-hander struck out a career high seven batters and only allowed two hits in his three innings of relief.
Richmond returns to action on Tuesday as they take on in-state rival William & Mary in Williamsburg. First pitch for that game is set for 6pm.
