Spiders Split Doubleheader With Marist
04/06/2018 | Baseball
Game 1: Richmond 8, Marist
Marist grabbed a 1-0 lead on a Spider miscue in the second, but it wouldn't take long for Richmond to answer.
The Spiders scored two runs to take a 2-1 lead over Marist in the home half of the third. Anthony Forte got things started in the inning with a single to left center and scored thanks to a sac fly from Vinny Capra. D.J. Lee crossed the dish from second base to give Richmond the lead on an RBI single from Kyle Adams.
Behind two runs in the fourth, the Red Foxes took a 3-2 lead. Richmond responded with a sac fly to even the score at 3-3, but a solo homer in the top of the 5th put Marist back on top, 4-3. The Red Foxes continued to threaten in the inning but Antonio Balducci and the Spiders ended that threat.
Back-to-back home runs from Tyler Plantier and Adams in the fifth put the Spiders back in control of the scoreboard, 5-4. Marist responded with three runs in the sixth capped by a two-run homer to go ahead by two. Richmond cut the Marist lead to one with a sac fly in the bottom half of the sixth, 7-6.
The game was tied again in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single from Daniel Brumbaugh to drive in Kyle Schmidt and make it 7-7. Sage Bruhl made the most of his one at-bat as he singled to center and drove in Adams from second base for the 8-7 victory.
Game 2: Marist, 10, Richmond 8
The second game of the Friday twinbill started much like the first with Marist taking a lead, this time a 2-0. Three runs in the third allowed the Red Foxes to go ahead, 5-0. Richmond answered in the home half of the inning as Lee crossed the plate on a single from Brumbaugh.
Richmond scratched at Marist's lead as they plated three in the fourth to cut the lead to one, 5-4. After the Spiders put up a three-spot Jacob Lamb struck out three Red Foxes in the fifth.
Marist tacked on three runs in the sixth to go up 8-4. They added a run in the seventh but Tim Miller's three-run homer cut the Red Foxes lead to two, 9-7. Behind a double, Marist was able to add another run in the eighth to take a three-run advantage.
The Spiders looked for some ninth inning magic. Brumbaugh scored on a Justin Cook single to cut Marist's lead to two, 10-8, but the Red Foxes would hold on to secure the win.
