Lowe, Spiders Pick Up Win at Longwood
05/09/2018 | Baseball
FARMVILLE, Va. – Behind a career outing from freshman Collin Lowe, the Spiders picked up a 3-2 victory at Longwood on Wednesday night. Lowe tossed six shutout innings and struck out eight. The right-hander scattered four hits in his outing and walked three.
With a leadoff single in the fourth inning, Kyle Adams reached the 200-career hit mark. The Spiders proceeded to load the bases in the inning as they looked for a chance to get on the board, but a strikeout ended the threat.
In the sixth, the Spiders were able to break through the zeros on the scoreboard. With runners in scoring position, a sacrifice fly from Brandon Johnson allowed Justin Cook to score easily and give Richmond a 1-0 lead. With a stand-up double from Sage Bruhl, Richmond grabbed a 2-0 lead as Michael Strait crossed the plate.
The Lancers cut Richmond's lead in half on an RBI groundout in the bottom half of the seventh. Another double from Bruhl and a Lancer miscue allowed the Spiders to tack on a run in the eighth and extend their lead, 3-1. Longwood struck again in the eighth to make it a one-run ball game, 3-2. With a Lancer in scoring position, Layne Looney took the hill and with three punch outs ended the threat. Longwood looked for a chance but between Johnson's two strikeouts and a groundout the chance was halted and Richmond came away with the win.
The Spiders are set to close out the 2018 home season this weekend with a three-game series with La Salle. Action begins on Friday, May 11 at 3:00 p.m.
