Spiders Drop Road Contest at No. 13 Delaware
09/13/2018 | Field Hockey
NEWARK, Del. – The University of Richmond field hockey team had its chances against No. 13 Delaware, but the Spiders were unable to overcome a powerful Blue Hen offense, falling on the road on Thursday afternoon, 7-2.
Both teams had offensive opportunities early, but Delaware got on the board first in the 12th minute with a backhanded shot off on their fourth penalty corner opportunity of the day.
The Blue Hens continued with the momentum, doubling their lead eight minutes later on an initial penalty corner shot. Despite pressure from the Spiders in the closing minutes of the half, Delaware was able to capitalize on a hard shot that sailed just over goalkeeper Emily Braunewell's shoulder to enter the break with a 3-0 advantage.
Delaware extended its lead to 4-0 early in the half, but the Spiders rebounded with a pair of penalty corners and a goal from freshman Steffie Bongers on the second attempt. Senior captain Olivia Hubert was credited with the assist.
Three minutes later, the Blue Hens jumped out to a 6-1 lead with two straight goals on a scramble in front of the net followed by a penalty stroke.
A lifted shot in the 53rd minute would make it 7-1, but the Spiders would not let up, as junior Elise Zwicklbauer collected the rebound off of her own initial shot and sent it past the UD goalkeeper for the Spiders' second goal of the afternoon to round out the scoring.
Richmond returns to action this Sunday, September 16, when they open Atlantic 10 action against Saint Louis. Game time at Crenshaw Field is set for 12 p.m.
