Spiders Shut Out Saint Louis to Open A-10 Play
09/16/2018 | Field Hockey
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond field hockey team battled through the rain on Sunday afternoon at Crenshaw Field, coming away with a 1-0 victory over visiting Atlantic 10 foe Saint Louis.
Â
The Spiders looked to have scored early on a rebound shot from senior Olivia Hubert, but the goal was called back to even things out.
Â
Neither team managed to tally a goal in the back-and-forth game until senior Nealy Henderson collected the ball on a broken corner in the 22nd minute and freshman Addie Nash deflected her shot past the Saint Louis goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead. The goal is Nash's third of the season.
Â
The rest of the game was a defensive battle for both teams. The Spiders managed to draw 13 penalty corners in the game, but the Billiken defense would only slip up on the Henderson goal. Elise Zwicklbauer led the Spiders with four shots on the day.
Â
Spider goalkeeper Emily Braunewell finished the day with five saves, staying strong in the cage during multiple scrambles directly in front of her. The win marks her first shutout of the season and fourth of her career.
Â
Richmond returns to action on Friday, September 21, when they continue A-10 play against crosstown rival VCU. Game time at the Rams' Cary Street Field is slated for 3 p.m.
