
Bucknell Stuns Spiders In Double Overtime, 2-1

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The University of Richmond field hockey team looked to be on to its second win of the weekend, but a goal late in the second overtime by Bucknell would give the home squad a 2-1 win on Sunday afternoon.

The Spiders picked up the pressure after the opening minutes. Addie Nash received the ball on a backhanded cross from Cadera Smith and lifted the ball over the Bucknell goalkeeper with 21 minutes remaining in the half, but the goal was called off.

As the first half came to a close, Elise Zwicklbauer looked to have scored by beating the Bucknell goalkeeper and tipping the ball in, but the Spider goal was waved off for a second time.

Despite the offensive pressure from the Spiders, neither team managed to log a tally in the opening stanza, sending the two teams into the break in a scoreless tie.

Richmond quickly earned a penalty corner to open the second half, but was unable to capitalize as the ball sailed wide right. Just minutes later, freshman Jessica Hendry who put the Spiders on the board with her second goal in as many games in a scramble in front of cage, but the Bison tied things up at 1-1 with a shot off of an original save from Braunewell with 18 minutes to play.

Both teams had chances in the closing minutes, but neither could score the go-ahead goal, sending the two squads into overtime.

Neither team managed a shot in the first overtime period, sending the Spiders and Bison into a second overtime. Bucknell threatened in the opening minute, but Braunewell turned the scoring chance away to keep the Spiders in it.

The Bison had a second 1-v-1 opportunity with seven minutes to play in the second overtime period, but Braunewell once again played the hero, stopping the chance for Bucknell.

A Bucknell penalty corner would seal the Spiders' fate, as the host team scored with just under three minutes to play in the second overtime to take the 2-1 win.

The Spiders return to action on Friday, September 7, when they host Old Dominion in the first of two-straight home games. Game time at Crenshaw Field is set for 3 p.m.

"We fought hard as a team today," head coach Jamie Montgomery said. "We moved the ball well, had some good opportunities to score, and played some very strong defense. I am really proud of the Spider hockey we played today!"
