Spiders Come Up Short Against No. 21 Old Dominion, 2-1
09/07/2018 | Field Hockey
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond field hockey team took a 1-0 lead in the first half against nationally-ranked Old Dominion, but the Monarchs struck twice in the second stanza on their way to a 2-1 victory at Crenshaw Field on Friday afternoon.
Â
The two squads battled through the opening minutes on one of the hottest days of the year, but Old Dominion took control early with six shots to start the game.
Â
The Spiders broke through in the 16th minute when freshman Addie Nash intercepted a pass in the ODU backfield and sent the ball to an open Olivia Hubert in the shooting circle, who beat the Monarch goalkeeper for the game's opening goal and Hubert's first of the season.
Â
It looked as if the Spiders would continue with momentum, but the Monarchs closed the half with four more shots. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Emily Braunewell stayed strong in the cage, stopping five shots in the opening half to send the Spiders into the break with the lead.
Â
Old Dominion came out firing after halftime, scoring less than three minutes in to even the score. The Monarchs' game-winner came in the 62nd minute on a penalty corner, and Richmond was unable to equalize in the closing minutes.
Â
Braunewell finished the game with seven saves in cage, while freshman Steffie Bongers logged her second defensive save of the season.
Â
The Spiders will stay at Crenshaw Field and return to action on Sunday, September 9, when they host Brown. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
