STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The University of Richmond football team opened Colonial Athletic Association Saturday evening on Long Island, suffering a 36-10 loss to 19th-ranked Stony Brook at LaValle Stadium. The Seawolves entered the game with the top rushing attack in the CAA and ran for 335 yards in the victory. The loss drops the Spiders to 2-2 on the season while Stony Brook improves to 3-1 overall.

The Spiders tallied 407 total yards of offense, but were only able to score one touchdown in the loss. Richmond passed for 334 yards while running for just 74 yards. Junior quarterback Kevin Johnson (Atlanta, Ga.) finished the game 29-of-40 through the air for 297 yards while junior wide receiver Cortrelle Simpson (Indian Head, Md.) had five catches for 122 yards. Senior Tyler Wilkins (Richmond, Va.) had a season-high seven catches for 98 yards.
Stony Brook had two rushers top the 100-yard mark in the victory for the second-straight time. Jordan Gowins led the way with 192 yards on 21 rushes, including a pair of touchdowns. Donald Liotine added 133 yards on 18 carries as Stony Brook gained 482 yards of total offense.

The Spiders started quick offensively, putting up 177 yards of offense in the first quarter. Richmond opened the scoring on the first drive, as Griffin Trau (Hanover, N.H.) converted a 24-yard field goal. The Spiders' scoring drive lasted 6:54 on the clock as they drove 76 yards on 16 plays for the early lead. Stony Brook answered back with a 77-yard drive and tied the game as Jack Pruban hit a 26-yard field goal.

Richmond looked to have an answer back on the ensuing drive when Johnson hit Simpson on a 54-yard pass down to the Stony Brook 5-yard line. The Spiders were ready to take the lead but Johnson's pitch to Deontez Thompson (Indian Head, Md.) was fumbled and Stony Brooks' Gavin Heslop scooped up the loose ball and returned it 87-yards for a touchdown and the lead.

Richmond's offense stalled in the second quarter, allowing Stony Brook to extend its lead to 16-3 before halftime. Seawolves' quarterback Joe Carbone connected with Julius Wingate on a 22-yard touchdown to give Stony Brook a 13-point lead heading into the locker room.

The Spiders' defense forced a pair of Stony Brook punts to start the second half and Richmond went into its bag of tricks to score its only touchdown of the evening and pull within 16-10. Johnson hit Wilkins on a 19-yard shovel pass to set the stage for a Spider splash play. Wide receiver Caleb Drake (Troy, N.C.) took a toss behind the line a scrimmage and launched a 37-yard touchdown pass to Simpson for his first career touchdown pass, narrowing the deficit to six.

Less than two minutes later, Stony Brook responded with a big play of its own to cap a 71-yard drive. Carbone hit Donavin Washington on a 48-yard touchdown strike to make it a 22-10 lead by the Seawolves. Dionte Austin (Baltimore, Md.) came up with a big pass breakup on the two-point conversion to keep it a 12-point deficit. Stony Brook would put the game away in the fourth quarter with a pair of rushing touchdowns from Gowins for the final score.

Defensively, three Spiders finished the game with 10 tackles each. Daniel Jones (Williamsburg, Va.) and Noah Nicholson (Olney, Md.) led the way on the backend while Billy Caughell (Apopka, Fla.) added 10 from the linebacker position while also recovering a fumble.

The Spiders return home next weekend when they host No. 2 James Madison. Game time at Robins Stadium is set for 3 p.m.
