
Second Half Surge Sends Wake Forest Past Spiders

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond field hockey team held perennial power Wake Forest scoreless in the opening half, but a potent Demon Deacon offense scored four unanswered goals in the second half for a 4-0 win on Sunday afternoon.

The Demon Deacons took the first two shots of the game, but the Spiders quickly rebounded with a flurry of their own to put the pressure on their ACC foe. The two teams battled to a scoreless draw at the half, with Wake Forest leading in shots, 6-4.

Wake Forest continued with momentum out of halftime, breaking into the score column with a penalty corner goal in the 46th minute. Six minutes later, the Deacons doubled their lead with a rebound goal, before going up 3-0 with another penalty corner goal in the 59th minute.

Wake Forest rounded out their scoring with another rebound goal in the 65th minute.

The Deacons finished with a 16-7 shot advantage, while Spider goalkeeper Emily Braunewell logged six saves on the day. Cadera Smith led Richmond with three shots on the afternoon.

The Spiders return to action on Friday, September 28, when they travel to face nonconference foe James Madison. Game time in Harrisonburg is set for 5pm.
