Spiders Fall In Battle at James Madison, 4-3

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The University of Richmond field hockey team took rival James Madison to the wire on Friday night, but the Dukes tallied the game-winner in the 67th minute to log a 4-3 victory in Harrisonburg.

The Spiders jumped out to an early lead less than five minutes in when Cadera Smith send the ball into the circle to Elise Zwicklbauer, who then found Addie Nash for the goal.

JMU bounced to tie the game in the 10th minute on a reverse low angle shot, but the tie would not last long. Just over six minutes later, Olivia Hubert carries the ball into the circle, forcing a penalty stroke which was converted by Smith for the 2-1 lead.

The Spiders took the lead into the break, ending the half with two penalty corners that they could not convert. Braunewell was strong in the cage, making seven first-half saves.

The Dukes jumped out of the break with momentum, scoring on two penalty corners in the opening four minutes of the half to take a 3-2 lead.

After back-and-forth play over the next 20 minutes, the Spiders drew their seventh penalty corner of the game and freshman Steffie Bongers took a straight shot that went past the JMU goalkeeper to tie the game with just over 10 minutes to play. Hubert was credited with the assist.

Despite a 4-1 shot advantage through the remainder of the game and another penalty stroke attempt for the Spiders, the Dukes scored with 3:20 to play to seal the win.

The Spiders finished with a 16-14 shot advantage, outshooting the Dukes 10-5 in the second half.

Richmond returns to Atlantic 10 action next Friday, October 5, when they host UMass at Crenshaw Field in the first of two home games on the weekend. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
