09/09/2018 | Field Hockey
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond field hockey team took a 2-1 lead into the break and tallied another two goals in the second half on its way to a 4-2 victory over Brown on Sunday afternoon at Crenshaw Field.
"From top to bottom it was our tenacity, defensive fight, and hard work that helped us get this team win," head coach Jamie Montgomery said after the game. "It was great to see players overcome errors and obstacles with the help of their teammates and bring it all together for an exciting game."
Â
The Spiders came out strong on the offensive end, applying pressure and earning a penalty corner in the 11th minute. Junior Amanda DaSilva took advantage of the opportunity, scoring her first career goal on a straight shot into the bottom left corner of the cage. Senior Olivia Hubert and redshirt sophomore Becky Carter were credited with assists on the play.
Â
Less than two minutes later, the Spiders earned another corner, once again scoring to take a 2-0 lead. Rookie Steffie Bongers tallied the goal, the first of her career, on Hubert's second assist of the day.
Â
After seven scoreless minutes, the Bears scored off of a penalty corner of the their own to cut into the Spider lead. Richmond finished the half with two more shots to take a 13-1 shot advantage into halftime.
Â
Brown looked to gain momentum in the second half with an early penalty corner, but it was the Spiders who would strike next, as rookie Addie Nash scored her second goal of the season and the eventual game-winner in the 41st minute. Junior Elise Zwicklbauer assisted on the goal.
Â
The Bears continue to pressure the Spider defense, taking the next three shots and scoring on their third opportunity, once again on a penalty corner.
Â
As Brown continued with momentum, redshirt junior Emily Braunewell stayed strong in cage, logging a pair of consecutive saves to hold the Spider lead. The Bears looked as if they would tie the game in the closing minutes, but a save from Braunewell followed by a break down the field led to sophomore Abra Granger's first career goal with just 14 seconds to play. Zwicklbauer was credited with her second assist of the day on the play.
Â
The Spiders finished the game with a 17-8 shot advantage and an 8-5 lead in penalty corners. Braunewell finished the day with five saves.
Â
Richmond will now hit the road, traveling to face nationally-ranked Delaware on Friday, September 14. Game time in Newark is set for 6 p.m.
