Richmond Drops Road Game At Duquesne

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team fell behind early and lost on the road at Duquesne, 80-54, Saturday afternoon at the A.J. Palumbo Center.
Junior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) finished with nine points and seven rebounds. Freshman Aniyah Carpenter (Baltimore, Md.) scored 12 points and was 5-for-6 from the free throw line. The Spiders were solid from the free throw line as a team shooting 88.2 percent off 15-of-17.
The Spiders are 3-15 overall and 0-5 in league play. Duquesne improves to 10-8 with a 4-1 Atlantic 10 record. The Dukes outrebounded Richmond 51-31 and scored 41 bench points.
Junior Amy Duggan (Norwood, Mass.) finished with eight points and four rebounds. Freshman Madelyn Neff (Hayward, Wis.) had a career-high three blocks.
Richmond shot 27.0 percent off 17-for-63 from the field. The Spiders only hit 5-for-26 from the three-point line.
The Dukes jumped ahead with an 8-2 run to start the game after two free throws by Libby Bazelak. Freshman Aniyah Carpenter made a layup to cut the lead to 8-4 with 6:27 remaining in the quarter.
Duquesne opened up a 12-point lead after an 11-3 run capped off by a fast break layup from Chassidy Omogrosso. The Dukes end the first quarter with a 20-9 lead.
In the second quarter, the Spiders came alive by scoring six-straight points off back-to-back layups by sophomore Kailyn Fee (Vienna, Va.). Graduate student Daijia Ruffin (Louisville, Ky.) nailed a three-pointer at the 7:00 minute mark to get Richmond within four at 22-18.
The Spiders kept battling after a Duggan jumper made the score 24-20 with 3:42 left in the second quarter. Duquesne closed the quarter on a 11-3 run to increase their halftime lead to 35-23. Ruffin led the team with five points.
Duquesne built its lead to 49-30 after Julijana Vojinovic hit a three-pointer with 5:08 remaining in the third quarter. The Spiders got within 15 points twice, including 55-40 after two free throws by Duggan with 1:47 left in the quarter.
The Dukes end the third quarter on a 7-0 run to put the game out of reach at 62-40 entering the fourth quarter.
Richmond was outscored 18-14 in the final quarter. Carpenter and Hinds-Clarke each had three points apiece in the quarter.
The Spiders return to the Robins Center to face Saint Joseph's on Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 7 p.m. The Spiders will be hosting a Pride Night.
