Richmond Drops A-10 Opener Against Rhode Island

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team held a nine-point fourth quarter lead but Rhode Island closed the game on a 24-9 run to earn a 66-60 win in the Atlantic 10 conference opener Saturday afternoon at the Robins Center.
Junior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) finished with her second-straight double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Hinds-Clarke shot 5-for-12 from the field and grabbed a game-high six offensive rebounds in the loss.
Sophomore Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) had 11 points, three assists and three steals. Freshmen Aniyah Carpenter (Baltimore, Md.) and Molly Mraz (Erie, Pa.) chipped in with nine points apiece. Mraz and Carpenter each hit three triples from the three-point line.
Richmond (3-11, 0-1) finished the game shooting 36.5 percent off 23-of-53 from the field. Rhode Island (6-7, 1-0) shot 40.4 percent off 23-for-57 from the field. The Rams' Nicole Jorgensen, a preseason third team all-conference pick, scored 26 points (9-for-11) and grabbed eight rebounds.
In the fourth quarter, the Spiders scored the first eight points off a couple of three-pointers by Daijia Ruffin (Louisville, Ky.) and Carpenter to make the score 51-42 with 8:07 remaining.
Rhode Island quickly answered with back-to-back three-pointers in less than a minute to cut the lead back to 51-48. Jorgensen got Rhode Island closer with two free throws making it a two-point game at 54-52 with 5:57 left.
With time ticking away, Rhode Island's Elemy Colome hit a three-pointer with 3:48 remaining. Colome was 0-for-7 from deep before give the Rams their first lead of the game at 55-54.
The Spiders couldn't beat the press with two turnovers and Rhode Island pushed their lead to 59-54 after a 7-0 run. Richmond wouldn't go away as Parson hit a jumper with one-minute left to get within three points at 63-60.
Richmond got a stop on defense but Parson just missed tying the game with a three-pointer with 12 seconds left. Rhode Island hit three of four free throws to earn the comeback win 66-60.
The Spiders opened the game by taking a 17-13 lead in the first quarter. Junior Amy Duggan (Norwood, Mass.) scored five points in the first quarter and Carpenter added three points.
Richmond continued their stellar play in the second quarter scoring the first 11 points to pull ahead 28-13 off a fast break layup from Hinds-Clarke.
Rhode Island would respond by ending the quarter on a 11-4 run to end the second quarter down by eight points at 32-24.
In the third quarter, the Spiders were outscored 18-11 helping Rhode Island cut their lead to one-point entering the fourth. Richmond shot just 5-for-15 in the third and a 7-2 run to end the quarter for Rhode Island proved costly.
Richmond was outrebounded 39-37 and ends their streak of three-straight wins against Rhode Island.
The Spiders will continue A-10 action with a road contest at Fordham on Wednesday, Jan. 9, at 11 a.m. in Bronx, NY.
