Richmond Begins A-10 Play Against Rhode Island

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team will begin Atlantic 10 conference play by hosting Rhode Island on Saturday, Jan. 5, at 2 p.m. at the Robins Center. The Spiders are 3-4 at home this season.
NEW YEAR, NEW RECORD
The University of Richmond women's basketball team turned the calendar to 2019 and started the new year with a 59-48 victory to end the non-conference season against UNCG on Jan. 2. The Spiders earned their third home win of the season and are 1-0 in 2019.
DUGGAN MOVING UP IN A-10 REBOUNDING
Junior forward Amy Duggan almost had a double-double against UNCG, scoring nine points with a team-best 13 rebounds. Duggan sits 11th in the Atlantic 10 in rebounds per game at 6.3 per game. In her last five games, Duggan has pulled down 47 rebounds (9.4 per game), entering conference play on a high note. Duggan is 10th in defensive rebounds per game at 4.4.
LAST MEETING VS. RHODE ISLAND
This will be the 23rd all-time meeting between the two teams with Richmond holding a 19-3 record and has won three-straight meetings. In the previous meeting, the Spiders opened up A-10 action with a road win at Rhode Island, 74-53, on Dec. 31, 2017. Richmond won every quarter and got 21 points from former Spider Micaela Parson. Kailyn Fee added 15 points off the bench after hitting five three-pointers. The Spiders also won both meetings in the 2016-17 season.
LAST TIME OUT
The University of Richmond women's basketball team defeated UNCG, 59-48, on Jan. 2 to improve to 3-10 on the season. The Spiders had a balanced effort with three players finishing in double-figures with freshman Aniyah Carpenter leading the way with 14 points off the bench. Junior Jaide Hinds-Clarke earned her third career double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Alex Parson added 13 points and junior Amy Duggan grabbed 13 rebounds and was one-point shy of a double-double with nine points.
Richmond used a strong third quarter, outscoring UNCG 16-9 to build an eight-point lead heading into the final quarter. The Spiders outrebounded the Spartans 44-39 and held UNCG's leading scorer to just nine points after coming in averaging 19 points per game.
The Spiders hit eight three-pointers in the victory and held UNCG to just 2-for-13 from the three-point line. Freshman Molly Mraz was inserted into the starting lineup and contributed six points and played stellar defense in 29 minutes of work.
