Richmond Outlasts UMass In 62-58 Win

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team made one final defensive stop to secure its third-straight Atlantic 10 victory 62-58 Sunday afternoon against UMass. Junior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) posted her sixth double-double of the season and third in a row with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Graduate student Daijia Ruffin (Louisville, Ky.) finished with 15 points and five rebounds. Sophomore Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) added 13 points and dished out three assists. Freshman Aniyah Carpenter (Baltimore, Md.) scored eight points off the bench.
Freshman Molly Mraz (Erie, Pa.) continued her solid play on the defensive end holding UMass's Hailey Leidel to only seven points.
Richmond (6-15, 3-5 A-10) with the win ties UMass with a 3-5 A-10 record. The Spiders shot 38.9 percent from the field and forced 19 turnovers for UMass.
The Spiders led by three points, 61-58, with 27 seconds left giving UMass a chance to tie. The Minutewoman missed a jumper but got a team offensive rebound. Genesis Rivera missed a game-tying three-pointer and Mraz came down with the rebound. Mraz hit one of two free throws to put the game away 62-58. The Spiders were outscored 20-15 in the fourth quarter but held on for the victory.
Richmond started the third quarter with a 5-0 run to pull ahead 36-28 with 7:29 on the clock after a basket by Hinds-Clarke. UMass answered with back-to-back three-pointers to cut the lead to 36-34. A couple minutes later, UMass tied the game at 38-38 after a jumper from Destiney Philoxy at the 4:23 mark.
The Spiders responded with clutch 9-0 to end the third quarter to go up 47-38 over UMass. Freshman Emma Squires (Kingston, Mass.) started the run with a layup followed by a three-pointer from Mraz. Carpenter drove the lane for a bucket and Hinds-Clarke scored with 41 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Richmond went ahead by nine points at 49-40 after a layup from Hinds-Clarke with 7:09 left. UMass continued to battle cutting the lead to 49-47 after a 7-0 run capped by a layup from Leidel. Richmond would score the next six points before another UMass rally. In the end, the Spiders made two key defensive stops to earn the win.
UMass opened the game with a 11-2 run thanks to three three-pointers from Vashnie Perry. Richmond battled back holding the Minutewoman to two points the rest of the quarter finishing with an 8-2 run. The Spiders trailed 13-10 after one quarter.
Squires quickly tied the game at 13-13 with a layup plus the foul. Hinds-Clarke gave Richmond their first lead at 17-16 with two made free throws.
The Spiders went on a 10-3 run to open up an eight-point advantage after back-to-back jumpers by Parson. Richmond was outscored 9-4 by UMass to end the second quarter with a 31-28 lead.
Hinds-Clarke had eight points and eight rebounds to help Richmond secure a three-point lead after two quarters.
The Spiders will travel to face Dayton on Wednesday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m. in Dayton, Ohio.
