RICHMOND, Va. – Spider swimming and diving hits the road this weekend for the first time in the 2019-20 season. Richmond heads to Loyola University in Maryland for the Thomas Murphy Invitational on Friday night and Saturday. The Spiders will be one of five teams competing in the two-day meet at the Mangione Pool at the Fitness and Aquatics Center.
The Spiders are coming off of a 2-0 weekend at the Richmond Duals, defeating defending Atlantic 10 Champions Duquesne on opening night, and knocking off Davidson the following day. During the weekend, the Spiders' Maggie Purcell (Southampton, N.Y.) was named the A-10's Performer of the Week for her efforts. She swam in six events throughout the weekend, winning each event she competed in.
Richmond also had strong showings from its more experienced swimmers as Hannah Gouger (Cockeysville, Md.) swam the top times in the 100 and 200-backstrokes. Lexie Gilbert (Annapolis, Md.) set the tone on the longer freestyles, earning Richmond's top times in the 500 and the 1650 freestyles.
Freshman standouts include Lauren Medlin (Cary, N.C.) and Claire O'Shaughnessy (Laurel, Md.). Medlin was tough in the shorter freestyles, earning Richmond's top times in the 50 and the 100 freestyles. O'Shaughnessy turned in solid times in the 100 and 200 butterflies.
This weekend's event will feature three different sessions with a running score throughout the weekend. The Spiders will hit the pool Friday night, Saturday morning and will end the weekend with a session Saturday evening.
