The Spiders are coming off a 35-25 victory on the road over previously 19th-ranked Delaware last weekend. Richmond scored 21 first quarter points against the Blue Hens and was able to run out the clock on the final drive, lasting over seven minutes and keeping the ball out of Delaware's hands. Redshirt freshman Aaron Dykes (Knoxville, Tenn.) was the catalyst becoming the first player in Richmond football history to return two kickoffs back for touchdowns in the same game. Dykes, who was named the STATS FCS National Special Teams Player of the Week, returned one kick 100-yards and another 88-yards back for scores.
Redshirt junior quarterback Joe Mancuso (Blairsville, Ga.) continued his strong play of late, accounting for three touchdowns against the Blue Hens. Mancuso rushed for two scores in the first quarter and also connected on a deep touchdown pass for the final touchdown of the day. Over the past three starts, he has accounted for nine touchdowns overall while only committing two turnovers.
Mancuso leads the Spiders on the ground this season, rushing for 411 yards on 70 carries for a 5.9 yards per carry average. He is the top rushing quarterback threat in the CAA this season and has rushed for six scores. Additionally, he has passed for 1,222 yards this year on 86-of-136 with eight passing touchdowns despite not playing in two games this season.
Graduate transfer wide receivers Keyston Fuller (Griffin, Ga.) and Charlie Fessler (Erie, Pa.) lead the Spiders through the air. Fuller has caught 38 passes for 781 yards and six touchdowns this season. He is coming off of a 161-yard performance against Delaware last week. Fessler leads the team with 40 receptions on the year for 495 yards and a pair of scores.
Defensively, the Spiders rank second in the CAA with 23 sacks in eight games. Senior defensive lineman Maurice Jackson (Levittown, Pa.) leads the team with 7.0 sacks this year – all solo – and has 11.5 tackles for loss. Redshirt sophomore defensive lineman Kobie Turner (Clifton, Va.) is second on the team with 5.5 sacks and is tied for the team lead with 11.5 tackles for loss.
Junior linebacker Tyler Dressler (Covington, Va.) leads the team and the CAA with 10.1 tackles per game this year. Dressler has a team-high 71 tackles, despite missing last game due to an injury. Freshman linebacker Tristan Wheeler (Bethlehem, Pa.) leads all freshman in the NCAA FCS level with 69 tackles this season, despite not starting until the fourth game of the year.
Saturday's game marks the sixth meeting all-time between Richmond and Stony Brook. The Spiders are 2-3 all-time against the Seawolves. Richmond won the first two meetings in series history with a 42-0 win in 2007 and a 39-31 win in 2013 on the road. Stony Brook has won the past three games in the series, posting a 42-14 win in 2016, a 27-24 win at Robins Stadium in 2017 and a 36-10 victory last year over the Spiders. Last season, the Seawolves rushed for 335 yards against the Spiders and scored a defensive touchdown in the win.
Stony Brook enters Saturday's game with a 5-3 overall record and a 2-2 mark in CAA play. The Seawolves are coming off their biggest win of the year, knocking off fifth-ranked Villanova 36-35 with a kick as time expired. Stony Brook rallied from multiple touchdowns down in the closing minutes to steal the victory away from the Wildcats.
Stony Brook is one of the top rushing teams in the CAA, averaging 226.2 yards per game on the ground and scoring 18 rushing touchdowns. The Seawolves have three running backs that are all over 450 yards this season. Seba Nekhet leads the team with 506 yards rushing on 92 carries while Ty Son Lawton has 500 yards rushing on 103 carries and a team-high seven touchdowns. Isaiah White is third on the team with 465 yards rushing on 88 carries. All three running backs would lead the Spiders in rushing this year.
Quarterback Tyquell Fields is having a great first season as a starting quarterback. Fields has completed 98-of-188 passing for 1,751 yards, averaging 17.86 yards per completion. Fields also has rushing for 265 yards on 61 carries this season. He has passed for 10 touchdowns and rushed for four scores.
