Parson’s Clutch Free Throws Give Spiders Victory At Georgetown

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Junior Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) hit two free throws with six seconds left to give the University of Richmond women's basketball team a 51-49 win on the road at Georgetown Tuesday night at McDonough arena.
"I am really proud of the effort on that last play," head coach Aaron Roussell said. "This was easily our best defensive game of the season and for us to win it on defense is what this team needs. Anytime you go on the road and win a game is something that we will cherish. This team has a bright future and I am really proud of them."
Richmond improves to 2-1 on the season and Georgetown falls to 0-2 with both losses coming against A-10 opponents. It marks the first win at Georgetown since 2003 for the Spiders.
Senior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) led the team with 17 points and five rebounds. Hinds-Clarke shot 2-for-4 from downtown. Sophomore Kate Klimkiewicz (Oakton, Va.) added 12 points. Parson finished with a season-high seven assists, one shy of a career high.
Georgetown outscored Richmond, 14-9, in the fourth quarter but the Spiders got fouled with six seconds left and Parson hit both free throws to go up 51-49. The Hoyas had one last attempt to win the game but their three-pointer missed at the buzzer.
Parson finished 4-for-5 at the free throw line. Redshirt junior Kaila Clark (Hughesville, Md.) impacted the game defensively with five rebounds and four blocks. The Spiders finished with a season-high 15 assists and seven blocks. The Spiders shot 72.7 percent from the free throw line going 8-for-11.
Richmond held Georgetown to just 31.1 percent from the field (19-for-61) and only 26.3 percent from the three-point line (5-for-19).
The Spiders outscored Georgetown 12-7 in the second quarter to take a 27-25 lead at halftime. Richmond hit five three-pointers, including two from Hinds-Clarke. Hinds-Clarke led the team with eight points. Sophomore Aniyah Carpenter (Baltimore, Md.) added seven points and freshman Elaina Chapman (Richmond, Va.) scored six points off the bench. Parson dished out a season-high six assists in the first two quarters.

The Hoyas opened up a 16-7 lead but the Spiders scored five-straight points to get within four points at 16-12 off a three-pointer from sophomore Claire Holt (Hoover, Ala.). Hinds-Clarke hit a three-pointer with 46 seconds left in the quarter as Richmond trailed 18-15.
The Spiders opened the second quarter with a 5-0 run with Hinds-Clarke scoring on a fast break layup. With 3:13 left in the quarter, Chapman scored off a layup to give Richmond a 25-21 lead. The Hoyas cut the lead to one point with 1:46 remaining but Carpenter scored to keep it 27-25 at halftime.
Richmond will host Florida Atlantic in the 2019-20 home opener on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 6 p.m. at the Robins Center.
