Squires’ Game Winner Lifts Spiders In Home Opener Against FAU
11/16/2019 | Women's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. – Sophomore Emma Squires (Kingston, Mass.) made the game-winning layup with seven seconds remaining to give the University of Richmond women's basketball team a 57-55 win against Florida Atlantic in the 2019-20 home opener Saturday at Robins Center.
"I give a lot of credit to our staff and to our players," head coach Aaron Roussell said. "I think we are now comfortable in these positions. Emma had the defender pinned and made a great play. I was really proud of our team there at the end getting that defensive stop."
With 25 seconds left, FAU's Abby Voss nailed a game-tying three-pointer but the Spiders would answer. Squires drove to the basket off the inbounds pass and scored to give Richmond the 57-55 lead with seven seconds.
The Spiders would make one last stop against the Owls forcing a jumper off the mark by Juliette Gauthier as time expired.
Senior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) led the team with 14 points and four rebounds. Hinds-Clarke also had two steals. Sophomore Kate Klimkiewicz (Oakton, Va.) added 11 points and grabbed five rebounds. Sophomore Aniyah Carpenter (Baltimore, Md.) had nine points and seven rebounds.
Richmond improves to 3-1 on the season and it marks the first time with a 3-1 record or better since the 2015-16 season. The Spiders outrebounded FAU 46-43, including 15 offensive rebounds. On the defensive end, Richmond forced 17 turnovers and came away with 11 steals.

Richmond used a 7-0 run in the second quarter to lead 33-16 capped by a layup from Carpenter. The Spiders went into halftime with a 36-19 lead entering the third quarter.
FAU would start to make a run out of halftime cutting the lead to 12 points at 44-32 off a free throw from Lotta Vehka-Aho. FAU's Crystal Primm made a layup with nine seconds left in the third quarter to make the score 47-36.
