Klimkiewicz Career Night Keeps Spiders Rolling Against William & Mary

RICHMOND, Va. – Sophomore Kate Klimkiewicz (Oakton, Va.) scored a career-high 21 points, including two clutch free throws with 14 seconds left to help the University of Richmond women's basketball team defeat William & Mary, 76-73, Wednesday night at the Robins Center.
"I thought we had some players come off the bench tonight and make some huge additions," Head coach Aaron Roussell said. "I think we are really starting to jell and become a team. I thought we had great ball movement tonight and I am really proud of our players."
The Spiders improve to 4-1 for the first time since a 5-1 start during the 2015-16 season. William & Mary suffers its first loss of the season at 3-1. Richmond finished the game shooting a season-high 50.9 percent from the field (27-for-53) and a blistering 62.5 from the three-point line (10-for-16).
In the fourth quarter, Richmond trailed by one before junior Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) drained a three-pointer to make the score 58-56 with 9:40 remaining. A couple of three-pointers by Klimkiewicz pushed the Spider lead to nine points at 67-58 with 6:53 on the clock.
The Tribe would mount a comeback with a 10-2 run to cut the lead to one point at 69-68 with 3:53 left. William and Mary would tie the game at 71-71 after a free throw by Victoria Reynolds with 1:24 remaining. With just under a minute left, Parson hit a huge three-pointer to give Richmond a 74-71 lead.
William and Mary would cut the lead back to one at 74-73 but Klimkiewicz hit two free throws to go back up 76-73. The Tribe would have two chances to tie with three-point attempts in the closing seconds but neither would fall.
Klimkiewicz finished 7-for-10 from the field and was 3-for-4 from downtown and grabbed eight rebounds. Sophomore Claire Holt (Hoover, Alabama) had nine points and redshirt junior Kaila Clark (Hughesville, Md.) pulled down a season-high nine rebounds.
Both teams finished with 28 points in the paint and Richmond scored 29 points off the bench. The Tribe's star player Eva Hodgson finished with 29 points off 10-for-17 from the field and continues her perfect start at the free throw line going 6-for-6.
Richmond fell behind 43-38 at halftime due to early foul trouble by two starters as senior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) had two fouls and sophomore Emma Squires (Kingston, Mass.) was charged with three fouls.
Klimkiewicz scored nine points and grabbed four rebounds. Holt added nine points off the bench to keep the Spiders close.
Richmond shot 80 percent from the three-point line going 4-for-5 and was stellar from the free throw line at 88.9 percent (8-for-9). The Spiders stormed out to a 12-3 lead capped off by a layup from Squires.
The Tribe would answer with a 10-0 run thanks to red-hot shooting by Hodgson who finished with 10 points. Hodgson would lead all scorers with 13 points by halftime.
The Spiders were outscored 22-18 in the second quarter. Richmond opened the third quarter with a 5-0 run to tie the game at 43-43. Coming off the bench, junior Kailyn Fee (Vienna, Va.) hit a corner three-pointer to give Richmond a 54-52 lead with 2:14 left in the third.
The Spiders would shoot 58.3 percent in the third quarter outscoring William & Mary 17-13 to get within one point. Richmond is 2-0 at the Robins Center and earned its first comeback win of the season after trailing by seven points. The game featured 10 lead changes and seven ties with the Spiders coming through in the end.
Richmond will travel on the road for a non-conference battle at Drexel on Sunday, Nov. 24, at 2 p.m.
