11/24/2019 | Women's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team trailed by one point with 90 seconds left but fell just short on the road at Drexel, 58-52, Sunday afternoon at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
"That was a battle and unfortunately we just couldn't get all the way over the hump," head coach Aaron Roussell said. "Our kids played hard but missed a few tough breaks and just missed on a few opportunities late. I'm proud of how hard we are playing and know that this is a group that will continue to improve."
Sophomore Emma Squires (Kingston, Mass.) finished with 14 points and grabbed a career-high seven rebounds. Senior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) added 10 points and sophomore Aniyah Carpenter (Baltimore, Md.) had 10 points.
The Spiders fall to 4-2 on the season and see their three-game winning streak come to an end. Richmond shot 45 percent for the game off 20-for-44 from the field. The Spiders held Drexel to just 2-for-11 shooting from the three-point line but the Dragons went 9-for-10 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.
With 1:30 remaining, Carpenter hit a corner three to get Richmond within one point at 53-52. The Spiders got a defensive stop but committed a turnover with 30 seconds left. Drexel's Keishana Washington hit one of two from the free throw line and Kate Connolly got the offensive rebound. Washington hit two more free throws to put the game out of reach.
Richmond led 14-10 after the first quarter but was outscored 17-13 in the second quarter to go into the locker room tied at 27-27. Squires had nine points and five rebounds. Hinds-Clarke added six points and two rebounds.
The Spiders opened the game with a 6-2 run with buckets from Squires and Hinds-Clarke. Carpenter drained a three-pointer to push Richmond's lead to 9-4 in the first quarter. Another Hinds-Clarke layup gave the Spiders a 14-6 lead with 4:29 left in the quarter. Drexel scored the last four points to only trail 14-10 after one quarter.
Squires started to heat up with seven of her nine points coming in the second quarter. Sophomore Kate Klimkiewicz (Oakton, Va.) scored on a layup to make the score 25-21 with 4:08 remaining in the second quarter. Drexel went on a 6-2 run to end the quarter and go into halftime tied at 27-27.
In the third quarter, Drexel took its first lead of the game after a three-pointer by Hannah Nihill with 7:32 on the clock. Squires answered with a three-pointer right back to tie the game at 32-32. Drexel built a six-point lead at 40-34 but the Spiders ended the quarter on a 5-2 run to get within three.
Senior Amy Duggan (Norwood, Mass.) posted a season-high nine points off the bench and grabbed six rebounds. Richmond had 16 assists with Carpenter leading the way with a career-high five.
In the final quarter, Richmond battled but couldn't make the final play. Drexel's Bailey Greenberg finished with a game-high 25 points off 11-for-20 shooting.
"When we played together there were some really cool stretches to watch," Roussell said. "Seeing 16 assists on 20 made field goals is an impressive number."
Richmond will take part in the Coastal Carolina Thanksgiving Tournament starting with a game against the host school Coastal Carolina on Friday, Nov. 29, at 2 p.m.
