RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond swimming and diving is back in action in a three-day meet this weekend, hosted by Atlantic 10-foe George Mason. The Spiders will be one of nine teams competing at the Patriot Invitational this weekend, joining UMBC, American, Seton Hall, UNCW, Drexel, Florida Atlantic and Shippensburg. The Spiders have competed against George Mason and Drexel earlier this season at the Thomas Murphy Invitational.
The Patriot Invitational will be held at the George Mason University Aquatic and Fitness Center in Fairfax. The event will feature three days of competition with preliminary rounds swam at 10 a.m. each morning, and the finals rounds beginning at 6 p.m. in the evening.
Thursday will feature six events, including the 200 freestyle relay, the 500 freestyle, the 200 individual medley, the 50 freestyle, the 400 medley relay and the 3-meter diving competition. Friday will feature the 200 medley relay, the 400 individual medley, the 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 back stroke, the 800 freestyle relay and the 1-meter diving event. Friday will begin with the 1650 freestyle, followed by the 200 backstroke, the 100 freestyle, the 200 breaststroke, the 200 butterfly and the 400 freestyle relay.
Last time out, the Spiders dropped a pair of dual meets in Blacksburg against the reigning Division II National Champions, Queens University of Charlotte, and the host, Virginia Tech. Despite the team finish, sophomore Maggie Purcell (Southampton, N.Y.) earned the Atlantic 10's Performer of the Week award. In the meet, she took first in the 100-yard breaststroke, the 200-yard breaststroke and the 200 IM. This is the second A-10 Performer of the Week award this season for Purcell after winning three Rookie of the Week awards last season.
The Spiders had three individuals win A-10 Performer of the Week awards last season. Divers Sydney Weiskopf (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and Maddie Chao (Niskayuna, N.Y.) as well as Hannah Gouger (Cockeysville, Md.) each took home a weekly award. Gouger went on to win the A-10 Championships Most Outstanding Performer for her efforts during the A-10 Championship meet in Geneva, Ohio as she qualified for the Olympic Trials.
