RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond swimming and diving is back in action Friday evening as they head to Blacksburg for a meet with the defending Division II National Champion Queens University Royals, and the host Virginia Tech Hokies. The Spiders are coming off of a weekend in Baltimore at the Thomas Murphy Invitational. The five days between events is the shortest turnaround between two separate events for the team this season.
After winning both dual meets at the Richmond Duals to open the season, the swim and dive team faced a tough task last weekend in Baltimore. The Spiders took fourth in the five-team event at Loyola. The team scored 697 points, led by a couple first place finishes from senior Hannah Gouger (Cockeysville, Md.) and sophomore Maggie Purcell (Southampton, N.Y.).
Freshman Lauren Medlin (Cary, N.C.) added a second place finish in the 100-yard freestyle, and was a member of several relay teams that finished in the top three of their respective events.
The depth of the team was tested at the Thomas Murphy Invitational, competing against roster twice the size of Richmond's. The Spiders had four or more competitors in nine events, and a season-high eight competitors in the 200-individual medley. Purcell currently holds the top time in that event, swimming in 2:04.70 in the dual meet with Duquesne to open the season.
The Queens program enters this weekend having competed in three events, all in Charlotte. The Royals hosted Davidson, UNC Asheville and Georgia Southern, winning nine events and placing first. Queens went on to two duals events, defeating Emory and Wingate all at home.
The Hokies enter this weekend with a 1-2 overall mark, dropping two dual meets to Big Ten opponents Ohio State and Penn State. They opened the season at home against fellow A-10 competitor George Washington, defeating the Colonials 208-87. Last weekend in Pennsylvania, the Hokies dropped the first meet of the weekend 247-106 to the Buckeyes and closed the weekend with a 216.5-136.5 score with the Nittany Lions.
