Swim and Dive Competes in Blacksburg with Queens and Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Spider swimming and diving was back in the pool Friday evening in Blacksburg. The Spiders took on the host Virginia Tech Hokies and the reigning Division II National Champions, Queens University in a pair of dual meets. Richmond finished the meet with several first-place finishes, but dropped both duals. The Spiders fell to the Hokies 189-105, and 178-116 to Queens.
Hannah Gouger (Cockeysville, Md.) earned a first-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke, swimming at 2:01.32, a new season-best. She garnered a third-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke, turning in a time of 56.14.
Maggie Purcell (Southampton, N.Y.) took first with a season-best 1:04.24 time in the 100-yard breaststroke, and followed that up with a first-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:19.67. She added another first-place finish in the 200 IM, finishing 1.14 seconds faster than the next closest competitor at 2:05.78,
Grace Palfreyman (Bridgewater, N.J.) added a fifth-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:21.71. In the 100-yard butterfly, freshman Claire O'Shaughnessy (Laurel, Md.) turned in a fourth-place finish at 58.62.
The 400-relay team of Gouger, Lauren Medlin (Cary, N.C.), Kristine Mihm (Wexford, Pa.) and Eliza Manning (Frederick County, Md.) finished in third with a time of 3:36.30, good for third place. The quartet of Palfreyman, Ellie Ronan (Marblehead, Mass.), Mallory Shake (Lexington, Ky.) and O'Shaughnessy finished fourth with a 3:39.24 time.
Richmond's divers were led by senior Sydney Weiskopf (Clifton Park, N.Y.) in the 1-meter event. Weiskopf tallied a score of 267.15, earning a sixth-place finish. Alex Beran (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and Emma Yeakley (Cornelius, N.C.) finished seventh and eighth, respectively with scores of 240.00 and 214.35.
Weiskopf continued to dive well in the 3-meter event, earning a second-place finish with a score of 267.90. Yeakley and Maddy Chao (Niskayuna, N.Y.) added second and third place finishes, respectively. Yeakley scored a 234.40 and Chao tallied a score of 217.50.
The Spiders are back in action in two weeks as they head to George Mason for the Patriot Invitational, November 21-23.
