Richmond Closes 2019 With Win Against Norfolk State

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team used a balanced effort and a career-high 21 points from senior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) to defeat Norfolk State, 77-69, Monday night at the Robins Center.
"Obviously, a great win for our team," head coach Aaron Roussell said. "We took a lot of high percentage shots tonight and I am proud of the effort. It was a game of runs and for us to win in the fashion that we did will help us down the road."
The Spiders (7-7) improved to 3-1 at home and were clutch at the free throw line going 25-for-28 (89.3 percent). Hinds-Clarke was 10-for-11 from the line, grabbed eight rebounds, two blocks and four steals to lead the way. Sophomore Emma Squires (Kingston, Mass.) finished with 19 points, including 3-for-6 from the three-point line. Sophomore Claire Holt (Hoover, Alabama) added 13 points.
Richmond shot 45.8 percent from the field (22-for-48) and dished out 17 assists. Norfolk State was held to just 13.3 percent shooting from downtown (2-of-15) and missed six free throws. The Spartans' Chanette Hicks led the team with 31 points, seven rebounds, eight steals and five assists in 34 minutes.
The Spiders weathered a couple of scoring runs by Norfolk State in the final two quarters. The Spartans used a 18-6 run in the third quarter to cut Richmond's lead to five points at 49-44. The Spiders answered by knocking down free throws and a three-pointer by Squires with 26 seconds left in the quarter pushed the lead back to 63-51. Norfolk State got within 10 after Hicks nailed a jumper at the third quarter buzzer.
In the final quarter, the Spiders jumped ahead by 16 points as Squires hit two free throws with 7:41 remaining. Norfolk State went on another run scoring the next 13 points to make the score 69-66 with 1:34 left. Sophomore Kailyn Fee (Vienna, Va.) came up with a loose ball and hit two clutch free throws to get the lead back to 71-66. Richmond made a couple of defensive stops down the stretch and Fee hit four more free throws to seal the win 77-69.
Richmond exploded for 31 points in the second quarter, a new career-high for points in a quarter, to build a 43-26 lead at halftime. Hinds-Clarke led the team with 15 points, including 6-for-7 from the free throw line. Squires added 12 points off two three-pointers and sophomore Kate Klimkiewicz (Oakton, Va.) had seven points. The trio combined for 34 of the 43 points.
The Spiders trailed after the first quarter 15-12 going on a scoreless drought of five minutes. Richmond caught fire in the second shooting 71.4 percent from the field (10-for-14) and was 3-for-6 from downtown. The Spiders also went 10-for-12 from the free throw line.
Richmond will open the Atlantic 10 slate with a road game at Saint Joseph's on Saturday, Jan. 4, at 2 p.m.
