Richmond Opens A-10 Season On The Road At Saint Joseph’s

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team will open the 2020 season with a road contest at Saint Joseph's to being Atlantic 10 play on Saturday, Jan. 4, at 2 p.m. at Hagan Arena.
ABOUT SAINT JOSEPH'S
The Hawks enter the Atlantic 10 opener with a 6-6 record but are 3-1 in their last four games. Saint Joseph's have won two-straight games with wins against Harvard (W, 63-49) and Navy (W, 49-40) to close out their non-conference season. The Hawks have two players averaging double-figures in Claire Melia (10.6 points per game) and Katie Jekot (10.4 points per game). Jekot leads the team with 18 three-pointers made and 13 steals.
HISTORY AGAINST SAINT JOSEPH'S
Richmond is 7-15 all-time against the Hawks but the Spiders have won two of the last three meetings. Richmond earned a 46-45 victory last season at the Robins Center. Amy Duggan hit two free throws with 16 seconds left to help Richmond pick up the win. Jaide Hinds-Clarke had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. The last time Richmond earned a road win against Saint Joseph's was Jan. 14, 2007, 64-57 in double-overtime.
HINDS-CLARKE SCORES CAREER-HIGH AGAINST NORFOLK ST.
Senior Jaide Hinds-Clarke, playing in her 105th career game, set a new career-high with 21 points and was 10-for-11 from the free throw line, a new career-high as well. Hinds-Clarke went 5-for-8 from the field and grabbed eight rebounds in the win against Norfolk State. Hinds-Clarke also swiped four steals and sits third in the A-10 in total steals at 29.
SPIDERS IN ATLANTIC 10 OPENERS
Richmond in the last 10 Atlantic 10 openers are 8-2 after dropping their A-10 opener last season 66-60 against Rhode Island at the Robins Center on Jan. 5, 2019. The Spiders are 6-4 in their last 10 road A-10 openers. The last time Richmond won an A-10 road opener was at Rhode Island, 74-53, on Dec. 31, 2017.
RICHMOND LEADS THE A-10 IN TOTAL ASSISTS
The Spiders have improved their ball movement from a season ago after finishing the season 319th in total assists with 312 assists in 2018-19. Fast forward to this season and Richmond already has 201 assists which is first in the Atlantic 10 and 44th nationally. Six Spiders have dished out 20 or more assists in Alex Parson (40), Kate Klimkiewicz (29), Claire Holt (28), Jaide Hinds-Clarke (24), Emma Squires (23) and Aniyah Carpenter (20).
LAST TIME OUT
Richmond closed out 2019 and its non-conference schedule with a 77-69 win against Norfolk State to improve to 7-7 on the season. The Spiders used a 31-point second quarter to lead by 17 points at halftime. The Spartans made a couple of runs in the final two quarters but the Spiders hit free throws down the stretch to bring home the win.
Senior Jaide Hinds-Clarke led the team with a career-high 21 points and sophomore Emma Squires poured in 19 points off 3-for-6 shooting from the three-point line. Sophomore Claire Holt added 13 points and hit three triples from downtown.
The Spiders had 17 assists on 22 made field goals and went 25-for-28 from free throw line, a new season-high. Hinds-Clarke went 10-for-11, Squires was 6-for-6 and Fee shot 6-for-6 at the foul line. Richmond also had a season-high 16 steals with Hinds-Clarke and Klimkiewicz each earning four.
